holiday season in california

holiday season in california

Our family is still getting used to warm weather during the holiday season, which feels uncharacteristic to the snowy winters I've become accustomed to my entire life in New York and Seoul. This year was particularly special as some of our extended family traveled out west to celebrate grandma's 90th birthday in LA.

The latter half of 2018 was overtaken by personal studies, resulting in significantly less creative explorations in my time outside of work. With the additional weight of these pursuits, good food, quality time with loved ones, and exercise became my personal outlets to decompress and unwind. While I’m not into new year’s resolutions, I do want to make an effort in the next couple of seasons to find a better balance and get back to personal creative projects.

Below, a few favorites from various trips to LA over the holidays and a last-minute staycation in Napa Valley.

Finally, a visit at The Broad downtown. Our trips to LA are typically very short, last minute, or agenda-ful for work or family events so it’s difficult to plan ahead. Not life-changing, but I took it as a "greatest hits" collection of modern art by buzzy insta-friendly artists. The collection made me reflect on larger exhibitions I've been fortunate to see in previous years in New York and Paris featuring some of my favorite artists like Ellsworth Kelly, Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and of course the great pop artists of the 60’s and 70’s. Considering it’s a free museum that’s open to the public, I think it’s a great way to dip your toes into modern art and see some great pieces IRL.

Paul and I booked a last-minute staycation in Napa over New Year's Eve weekend. Booking our stay on HotelTonight brought back the fondest memories of our cross-country road trip when we moved out to SF.

Back at Silver Oak, which I loved visiting in November with friends.

Just up the street from our hotel was an adorable new winery called Ashes and Diamonds . A mid-century modern dream, impeccably designed with tasty wine. The perfect last stop after a day of exploring wineries in the area. Big thanks to the staff for letting me back in the morning pre-operating hours so I could snag a few shots of the space free of any patrons.
